Keeping It Snug & Stylish
In spite of having lived in Boston, I am not really a winter person. The weather makes me lazy and honestly, I find the gloomy sky to be quite depressing. The only thing that makes me get out of bed in the cold is my love for jackets and boots. A smart winter coat is a must have. Yes! But it can be a serious investment. Here are some pointers to keep in mind before you splurge:
When in doubt, go with the Classic
Unless you have this bohemian personality that you like reflected in your choice of clothes, opt for a classic coat, when buying your first. While I am wearing a black one in the pictures, I am not asking you to be afraid of colour. Just keep in mind what will go with most things that are in your wardrobe and the functionality that you'd like to get out of your piece. Navy, Beige and Olive Green (colour of my first trench) are great alternatives to black, yet timeless colours.
Ditch the trends
You want to get a coat that you can wear for at least a few winters, so keep your body type and lifestyle in mind when you make your selection. Buying one which ends at your hips or just above the knees is a good choice that suits most people. Even in terms of composition, it doesn't work if it won't keep you warm. While the sportswear inspired technical fabric jackets are on-trend, get one like that only if it is your fourth, fifth jacket. No point wearing one and being cold.
Keep It Roomy
Always keep in mind that you may want to wear a sweater or a scarf inside and there needs to be space for that. You need to be able to pile on the layers and close the buttons with comfort.
