Gillette Venus Blogger Meet #subscribetosmooth
For all the beauty talk, I feel that things such as hair removal are often ignored. We all use some method or the other to get rid of unwanted hair and we all have so many questions about it. So, I was quite happy when Gillette organised an event to discuss tips and techniques of shaving.
Writers, bloggers and a panel of experts came together for a candid chat on April 30th, 2015 in Mumbai. The panel consisted of dermatologist Rashmi Shetty, hair & make-up artist Namrata Soni and actor Kriti Sanon.
While the questions started off slow (and believe me there were a lot of them), the three ladies answered each one in detail sharing personal insights, which each girl in the audience could relate to. Kriti Sanon said that shaving is the most convenient and hassle-free hair removal method as you don’t need to think before wearing a dress or have to wait till the hair is a certain length before you wax it off. I feel this is something we all probably agree with and then comes the big, BUT…
Yep the... BUT it will darken my skin, BUT it will make my hair thicker and darker, BUT I may cut myself, BUT it makes my skin itchy… All of the panelists, explained in detail how each one of these concerns is nothing BUT a myth…
Myth: Skin Darkening
Dr. Rashmi Shetty explained that shaving does not darken the skin. She said that shaving much like waxing removes a bit of the dead skin and to prevent our skin from tanning we must apply sunscreen, which is applicable for skincare regardless of shaving or not. As an added precaution she suggested shaving at night, so that you don’t head out into the sun directly after shaving. Alternately, if you do shave in the morning apply generous amounts of sunscreen. Namrata Soni added that “I have been shaving for 15 years and can guarantee that it hasn’t changed my skin color or hair growth. I don’t have dark underarms or dark legs.”
Namrata Soni shared that she has been shaving for the last 15 years and prefers it over waxing and hair removal creams. She recommended moisturising the skin before shaving and also stressed on doing it over wet skin. She also suggested applying moisturiser, aloe vera or calamine lotion post shaving to prevent itching.
Kriti Sanon added that itching may also occur if you press the razor too much while taking it over the skin. The Gillette Venus has been designed with "protective cushions that gently glide over skin for a smooth and comfortable hair removal experience.”
Myth: Hair Thickening/Darkening
Dr. Rashmi Shetty clarified that when we shave, we cut off the hair at the thickest part- which is the surface of the skin, so we feel as if the hair has become thicker while in reality its width has not changed. Once the hair grows out, it will grow out finer- similar to any other hair removal method,.
Namrata Soni added that over the years her hair has actually reduced and she needs to shave less frequently. She now shaves once in 10 days.
Dermatologist Rashmi Shetty, said that she has used the Gillette Venus razor recently and in comparison to other razors, it has a contoured shape with a movable head that glides easily over all tricky areas with no chance of cuts. It is easy to use with great control even over the knees. The Gillette Venus razor has also been designed with a non-slip handle to fit perfectly in a woman’s hand. All of the panelists recommended a wet shave using a shaving gel- Gillette Satin Care Gel. Namrata Soni also suggested applying hair conditioner on the legs before for a smooth shave.
Apart from answering all the queries here is what the experts had to say:
I have to admit that I found all points shared by the panelists to be quite compelling and I am willing to give shaving another try. I have decided to "subscribe to smooth” and taken up the Gillette Venus challenge. I will be sharing my unbiased opinions on this experience, so stay tuned to find out more…
